SYD HAMILTON
Sydney Holmes Hamilton who was born on 18 July 1898 at Sturt, South Australia, and died on 22 July 1987 aged 89. Syd was the senior winemaker at Hamilton’s Ewell Vineyards from about 1918 until 1957. He later founded Leconfield Winery at Coonawarra South Australia, aged 79.

Wife of Frank (Eric) Hamilton, mother of Robert Hamilton, grandmother of Mark Hamilton. Dorren was a member of the pioneering Chambers family which had extensive brewery and hotel interests through Chambers & Blade, the forerunner of the South Australian Brewing Company.

BRIDGEWATER MILL BEFORE RESTORATION BY HAMILTON'S EWELL VINEYARDS
The old Bridgewater Mill, historic landmark of the Adelaide Hills, was purchased by Hamilton's Ewell Vineyards in the 1960s to be used as a whisky bond, as the climate of the hills district perfectly suited maturation of whisky or brandy.

The waterwheel is one of the few of its type in the world measuring 36 feet in diameter weighing 17.5 tons and requiring a flow of 6500 gallons of water a minute to drive it.

No repairs had been carried out to the mill since it was built one hundred years earlier in 1860. Hamilton's renovations were extensive, adding spacious floors for bond storage.
